These symptoms can be caused by the reflux of stomach contents into the oesophagus. When you present with the above symptoms, your doctor may diagnose you with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
When stomach acid comes into contact with the tissue in the oesophagus, it can cause irritation, damage, and inflammation. Persistent irritation and inflammation can eventually progress to Barrett's oesophagus.
There are many factors that can worsen acid reflux, including alcohol, obesity, stress, fatty or oily foods, caffeine, and cacao. However, the underlying cause is often weakness of the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES), a muscular ring that separates the oesophagus from the stomach. When the LES becomes lax and does not close properly, stomach contents, including acid, can easily reflux into the oesophagus. Other important factors to consider include a hiatal hernia, delayed gastric emptying, food allergies, and SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).
The good news that GERD can be easily supported with diet, lifestyle and natural supplements. So if you suffer form acid reflux and heartburn, please know that Proton Pump Inhibitors, commonly prescribed medications for GERD (such as omeprazole) are not your only hope!
