Integrative oncology is an approach that combines conventional cancer treatments with evidence-based complementary and natural therapies to:
This holistic approach incorporates dietary modifications, lifestyle interventions, and natural remedies. It addresses not only the physical aspects of the disease but also the emotional and psychological factors that influence recovery.
In my practice, I always focus on supporting the whole person to help alleviate symptoms of any disease — and cancer is no exception.
Cancer has many root causes, and there is still no definitive clarity as to what triggers its development. According to the widely accepted somatic theory of cancer, random genetic mutations are believed to be the primary cause. However, in recent years, growing evidence suggests that genes play only a small role in cancer development. Researchers now increasingly agree that diet and lifestyle play a major role in the onset and course of the disease.
An example of this is Asian women and their risk of breast cancer. Asian women living in their native lands and following a traditional diet and lifestyle have lower risk of breast cancer compared to Western women. However, studies suggest that when they migrate to USA and adopt a Western diet and lifestyle, their risk of breast cancer increases by 60%. This clearly shows that diet and lifestyle, rather than their genes, are responsible for their increased breast cancer risk.
This is encouraging news, as diet and lifestyle are factors we can modify and control. By changing the way we eat, live, and manage stress, we can significantly influence our risk of developing cancer as well as the disease trajetory — and this is where naturopathic and nutritional therapy truly come in.
As the saying goes, “Genes load the gun, but the environment pulls the trigger” - While our genetic makeup may increase susceptibility, it is the internal environment of the body, the "Terrain", that ultimately determines whether disease takes hold or not.
As a Nutritional Therapist with a deep passion for integrative and holistic health, I am currently undertaking an Integrative Oncology course taught by the renowned Dr. Nina Fuller-Shavel. This training is expanding my understanding of both conventional and natural approaches to cancer. Upon completion, I will be fully qualified to practice integrative cancer care - support those who want to prevent cancer, as well as those who have been diagnosed with cancer and wish to support their health and recovery with natural therapies.
My goal is to offer personalized, natural cancer support that complements medical treatment, enhances resilience, and promotes optimal health during and after cancer therapy.
